Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Bowen treatment like?
The first appointment will usually be up to 1 ½ hours, to give time for a discussion about your general health and specific concern(s) before you receive your Bowen Therapy.
Treatments are usually given while you are lying on a massage couch, although many moves can be made whilst you are in a sitting position if lying down is uncomfortable.
Bowen can be done on the skin’s surface or through loose, non-slippery fabric, so you can remain fully clothed if you prefer. You will never be asked to undress fully, and towels or blankets will be used for warmth & modesty.
A series of small, gentle rolling moves are made over various parts of the body (eg back, legs, shoulders, neck etc). You will be asked if there are any areas that are sensitive or you do not want touching. The touch is light & gentle and there should be no discomfort. Most people find it very pleasant to have Bowen Therapy and drop into deep relaxation.
One aspect of a Bowen treatment that you may find unusual are the regular pauses given throughout the session, when the therapist moves away for a few minutes to allow you to lie quietly and relax.
How many sessions should I have?
A single/stand-alone Bowen treatment can bring about all sorts of positive changes and may be all you need. Lasting benefits for acute (short-term) symptoms are often seen after just 3-4 sessions. Older injuries and chronic (longer-standing) symptoms may require more sessions to maintain improvements in your symptoms. Appointments are typically spaced about 1 week apart.
After an initial treatment or series of treatments, some people like to have a regular ‘top-up’ for health maintenance, to boost resilience ... or just because they enjoy Bowen so much!
What happens after my treatment?
After your Bowen session you may notice improvements in your symptoms immediately, or it may take a few days – the body can continue to respond and adjust for up to a week after your treatment.
During this time, in order to allow your body to best respond to the treatment you’ve received, you are advised to not have other physical therapies (so as not to confuse or overwhelm the body), and avoid extremes of physical exercise, heat or cold (eg sauna or ice bath). Continuing with your usual exercise and activity is encouraged however.
It is also important to drink plenty of fluids - fascia is mostly water and keeping well hydrated will boost fascial elasticity and flexibly, as well as maximising cellular nutrition & detoxification, and so enhance your Bowen treatment.
